I will cover outfits for Women and Men and all couples! What works in your every day life may not necessarily be the outfit you would want to choose for your engagement session! WARNING: this is pretty in depth but will be worth it so listen up my little misguided souls! I’ll try to cover it ALL, colours, patterns, how to dress your shape ect. If I miss anything that you want to know feel free give feed back and let me know what you want to know when picking out your outfits! *Keep in mind there will always be exceptions! Lets start with Men since it seems as though you guys have the hardest time.. Lets say you love a good graphic tee, I’m all for the comfy band tee sitting at home or going for a beer, however in photographs they can be distracting, we don’t really want your Led Zeppelin or colourful oversized Nirvana shirt taking away from your personalities. Instead one option is a button up shirt, and I don’t mean buttoned all the way up to the top stiff and stale looking, I mean undo the top couple buttons, roll the sleeves wear a pair of khaki shorts and a nice pair of shoes. Let me dramatically elaborate on one of my most HATED choice of foot wear.. PLEASE FOR THE LOVE OF PHOTOGRAPHY DO NOT WEAR RUNNERS.. Just because you went and got yourself a new pair of Green and Blue New Balance Sneakers does not mean they should be featured in your engagement photos. Don’t get me wrong comfort is key, but how about instead of a colourful runner you have a neutral converse or stylish sneaker.. A runner will always be a NO, NO. FLATTER YOUR FIGURE LADIES AND GENTLEMEN.. let me say it loud for the people in the back! Make sure when picking out your outfits you are wearing clothes that fit your shape. If you are wearing a blazer make sure its fitted and the shoulder seams end where your shoulder does. If you are self conscious of a part of your body (since we all have something we don't love) stay away from outfits that are going to emphasize that part of you! I'll use myself as an example, I can be self-conscious of my hips and stomach in photos.. so I stay the heck away from dresses or shirts that are very tight fitting in that area. If I choose to wear something tighter I will typically layer something on top because layers can be our friends (like in the picture below) I added a button up and left it open to hide the parts of me I don't particularly like! Well that, and if I hadn't, I probably would have looked like I was wearing a big leotard,, and that just wouldn't be cute. Patterns.. Patterns, Patterns OHHH MYY! As you have seen in the picture above.. I love me some plaid WHOOT WHOOT, and I know there are many of you with me BUT when dressing couples PLEASE DO NOT BOTH WEAR PLAID, IT WILL CLASH IN PICTURES. If someone is wearing plaid or any pattern for that matter the other person should be wearing solids that will compliment what their partner is wearing! If you want to wear something with a pattern try to make it not too busy and not too bright, we don't want your clothes to distract from the two of you! Colour can be your best friend or it can be the look on your grandma's face because you just drop the f-bomb in front of her for the first time "Disappointment" DUN DUN DUNNNNN I seem to be starting with all the Don'ts so I wont stop now... Don't wear neons or really bright colours for your photos just like with patterns it can be very distracting and take away from you! Wear colours that will compliment not only each other, but also the background. Some pretty safe colours to go will always be neutrals, blues, and pinks (like blush or pastel pinks) If one person is wearing red, the other person should not be wearing purple the only way that will fly is if I'm photographing a group of the ladies from the Red Hat Society. Stay True to YOU, Be yourself!!!
This one is probably one of the most important tips, stay true to your style.. there is nothing worse then feeling uncomfortable or out of place in your outfit. Wear clothes that will 100% represent you and your style; an outfit that you feel good in can give you so much more confidence, especially in front of the camera. When I put on an outfit I feel amazing in, you bet your ass I'd have the confidence like I was strutin my stuff on a Ru Paul Runway! YAAASSS QUEEN! I'd probably even have the confidence to do a legendary Jonathan Van Ness hair flip, GET. IT. GIRL. Stay as close to your everyday look as possible, obviously everyone spruces up a bit but I mean if you decide you are going to load on the black eye make up for your photos and you typically wear nothing or if you do very neutral, you could end up being really disappointed with the outcome of the photos! This last piece is for my near or far sighted friends, I know lots of people who decided to not wear their glasses in their photos BUT they wear them every single day, all day long and 99% regret not wearing them for their photos because it wasn't "them". Moral of the story STAY TRUE TO YOU! Now that we've covered what to wear... go and channel your inner diva!! Head over to the contact section and book me for your upcoming engagement ;)

Hey there... I'm Dev, I am the owner of Devin Begin PhotographyI decided to put together a little What to Wear or Not to Wear to an engagement session. So many people ask what to wear, or if they don't ask, some people are disappointed with outfit choices afterwards and wish they had picked something else! I'm just trying to help prevent the regret so you can love the final results! |
